EDO-KOMON SERIES: 'ASANOHA'

Edo-komon are traditional Japanese designs from the Edo period (1603-1867). Edo-komon motifs consisting of auspicious symbols and patterns are the inspiration for many of my designs.

‘Asanoha’, derived from the foliage of the hemp plant, is one of Japan’s most enduring traditional motifs. Known for its strength and rapid growth, hemp is associated with health and vitality.

The pattern is often used on kimono made for newborn babies, symbolising a wish for healthy development.
