EDO-KOMON SERIES: 'HISHI-UROKO'

Edo-komon are traditional Japanese designs from the Edo period (1603-1867).　Edo-komon motifs consisting of auspicious symbols and patterns are the inspiration for many of my designs.

Hishi means "lozenge", and ‘Uroko’ (scale pattern) is a traditional Japanese design formed from a rhythmic pattern of triangles. It is inspired by the scales of fish, snakes, and dragons. Long associated with protection and renewal, it is believed to ward off evil spirits and bring strength to the wearer. As one of the Edo Komon textile patterns (fine stencil-dyed kimono designs from the Edo period, 1603–1867), it has been valued for its quiet refinement and symbolic meaning.
