EDO-KOMON SERIES: 'ICHIMATSU'

‘Ichimatsu’ is a checkerboard pattern named after a popular Kabuki actor of the Edo period (1603–1867). It has long been one of Japan’s most beloved traditional patterns.

‘Matsu’ means pine in Japanese, and as an evergreen tree, it is regarded as an auspicious symbol.
